Geoffrey Chaucer's Masterpiece: The Canterbury Tales

The Canterbury Tales, one of the most famous stories in the world, is a selection of tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer, the Father of English literature. The tales in the story were told by pilgrims as they travel their way to the burial place of Saint Thomas. The pilgrim with the best tale of all will have a free dinner. Examples of the tales written in the compilation are The Wife of Bath’s Tale, The Miller’s Tale, The Pardoner’s Tale, and The Knight’s Tale.

The story that got most of my attention is The Pardoner’s Tale. The tale was about 3 drunken thieves who were searching for Death, the murderer who killed their friend, to annihilate him. In pursuit of the killer, they encountered an old man who pointed out where Death is, at the foot of the groves. When the men arrived to the groves, they saw a bag of gold. They equally divided the gold among themselves. Then the youngest of the three left the woods to fetch food while the other two waited for him in the grove. While waiting, the two plotted to kill the youngest man so they can get hold of his gold bars. But the youngest man also has a plan of his own and that is to poison the other two. So he went to an apothecary and asked for poison and mixed it to the wine they will drink. When the youngest man returned, they immediately killed him. To celebrate their victory, they drank the wine the youngest man brought and died slowly because of the poison mixed in it. At the end, they all perished and none of them has succeeded in obtaining the bag of gold.

I liked the story because it tells us how GREED can make people so bad, how a bag of gold made the three thieves killed each other. Let us not be tempted to commit bad things just to obtain material wealth.

Heroes of Heroes

Heroes are people’s inspirations in daily life. They are the role models of some individuals. Some might even want to be like them. We all have our own heroes. Kids even mistake them as superheroes wearing capes, masks and symbols in their chest; battling villains with awesome superpowers or hi-tech gadgets.

Heroes are far more than that. They don’t need powers or weapons to defeat their enemies. With just a simple pen and paper instead of swords and guns, they can end a war and obtain peace to their country like what Dr. Jose Rizal did.

Jose Rizal(Philippines' National Hero)

What are heroes? What makes them heroes?  Heroes risk their own lives without hesitation to help others. Someone who gives their time to their loved ones to deliver happiness. Many of them died for their community while others perspire to make their society a better area to live.  Sometimes, they don’t need to sacrifice their being to be a hero. By just sharing some love to their family, they can be a hero for me.

Have you guessed my hero? If still not, then I will give you two clues. They we’re the ones who take care of me when I was just a sibling. They were  also the ones to wake me up every morning; prepare food for my recess and lunch at school.  Yes, they are my parents.

My Dad
My Mom

They will do anything and everything to make me happy. They were the one who helped me with my assignments and projects and the ones to give me advices about my problems regarding quizzes, news reports, tests and even CRUSHES. Mom and Dad always work at their best supply all the stuffs I need at school. They will buy all the things I wanted, even if it is unnecessary just to make me feel delighted. My parents share their knowledge in my subjects at school to assist me with my homework. My Dad helps me in Math while Mom teaches me in Science and English. They we’re there when I graduated Elementary and will probably be there watching me graduate High School and College. I always feel comfortable when I’m with them. Even though they scold me for something naughty I did, it is normal to all parents. They just want me to have a better life because all parents care for their child. For me, they are one of a kind. I really love them.

So after I grow up and have a work, I will be the one to take care of them. It is my turn to riposte the happiness and affection I received from them by giving them every gram of love I have here in my heart.

To all those who read this, give your moms and dads a warm hug, apologize for all the bad things and mistakes you have done and give them a kiss and say “I love you”. We are all blessed having a mother and a father that will guide us to the right path. They truly are the “heroes of heroes”. This ends my essay about my heroes! Thank you for reading!

Here is a short video showing that you should love and respect your parents.
